This Is for Everyone

Tim Berners-Lee卿の新著『This Is for Everyone』（「for」か「For」かで表記揺れを観測しているけれど、私はPan Macmillanのページに従い小文字の「for」を採用）については、すでに3度にわたり触れてきました：

ようやくAudible版を聞き終えたので、特に印象に残った3点を覚え書き。何よりまず、同じ年に生まれた故Steve Jobs氏との関わりについて。1992年にNextが催した開発者ミーティングでのエピソードで、同イベントにCERNから参加・出展したものの、本当にあとちょっとのところでJobs氏と邂逅を果たす機会を逃したくだりには、物凄い切なさを覚えました。

Maybe I flatter myself, but I believe that if Jobs had just taken a few more steps down the table to see that 1992 World Wide Web product demo, the world might be a completely different place.

本書のなかでJobs氏の名前はちょいちょい登場していて、彼に対するBerners-Lee卿の謝意、どころか一種ファン心理のようなものが感じ取れるのだけど、2人が出会えていたらWebは、世界はどうなっていただろう。その2人ともが私の人生に大きく影響してきたこともあり（MacとWebのおかげで今の自分がある）、なんともいえない気持ちになります。

Fortunately - and I'm very optimistic about this - the paradigm shift of AI offers us a unique opportunity to hit the reset button. As the standards around this technology take shape, we have the opportunity not to repeat the mistakes of the social media era.

2点目に挙げるのが、AIに対する楽観的な見方。なるほど、SNSで犯した過ちを是正する機会みたく捉えていたのか......そういう発想は自分には完全になかったので、とても興味深い。ちなみにSNSに関してはMastodonにたびたび触れていて、Mastodon is my preference because the protocol, ActivityPub, is a W3C standard. In December 2023, W3C left Twitter/X for Mastodon.とも言及されてます。最後に、子供たちにスマートフォンを持たせるべきかという問いに関して

My answer to this is basically, yes. Kids should learn to collaborate, and they should learn to collaborate online with their friends. What we have to block is not smartphones, nor even social media, but the harmful algorithms often used by social media - the psychological equivalent to giving kids access to a slot machine!

と明記されていたのが素晴らしい。青少年にスマホやSNSの利用を禁じる動きが国内外を問わず広がっているけれど（最近目にした事例はスマホ依存に一石「1日2時間以内」条例、愛知県豊明市で成立）、立法関係者には、ぜひ上記のくだりを100回くらい読んでいただきたい。悪いのはスマホでもSNSでもなく、中毒性を生むアルゴリズムであって、是正すべきはそのベンダーだということ。

ともあれ、誕生から現在に至るまでのWebの歴史を振り返りつつ、来るべき未来に向け希望を持つ（というより「絶望しない」）ためには最高の書籍でした。Tim Berners-Lee卿、ありがとうございます。あなたのおかげで、今日も私はWebに、世界にアクセスしています。
