人力飛行機DaedalusがWashington D.C.へ

1988年以来、いまだ人力による最長飛行時間、最長飛行距離の世界記録を保持し続けているDaedalusの展示場所が変更されていたようです。これまでは生みの親たるMITからほど近いMuseum of Science（MOS）に展示されており、僕は学生の時分から都合3回（博物館の目の前を通過したのもカウントしたら4回）の対面を果たしているのですが（2004年12月と2007年11月訪問時の写真についてはFlickrにあります）……MIT航空宇宙学科が今年1月に発行していたenewsより、許可を得て以下に関連の記事とその日本語訳、画像を掲載します：

After many years of display in Boston's Museum of Science, AeroAstro's famed human-powered aircraft Daedalus 87 has a new home worthy of its place in the annals of aviation and engineering landmarks. The craft is now on loan to Dulles Washington International Airport where it is prominently displayed in Terminal B above the new AeroTrain depot. AeroAstro and the MIT Museum collaborated on the loan. The funding and expertise that made the move possible were generously provided through alum John Langford, original manager of the Daedalus project, and Aurora Flight Sciences Corp., which he founded. Aurora and AeroAstro maintain a strong strategic relationship, cooperating on an ever-growing array of projects.

訳文：ダイダロス87は、1987年に製作された2機のダイダロスのうち1機目にあたります。同機は、ダイダロス88（バラバラになってスミソニアン協会に保管されています）のバックアップの役目を果たしました。ダイダロス88は、クレタ島からサントリニ島までの115kmを飛行し、距離と飛行時間において人力飛行の世界記録を保持しています。

なお、第一報を知らせてくれたD.C.在住のMakによると、機体は空港内でも航空券を持っていないと立ち入れない場所に位置しているらしい。悩ましいですね……しばらくD.C.はおろか海外に出向く予定もないけど、頭の隅にはとどめておいて、いずれは是非D.C.に引っ越したDaedalusを目にしたいものです。また、記事の引用やら翻訳に関連して連絡を取り合ったLitant氏曰く、（1）将来的にDaedalusをD.C.から移設する予定はいまのところなく、（2）同じくMOSで長きにわたり展示されていたMonarchとDecavitatorはMITのBuilding 33へ移設されたとのこと。最後に：Thank you so much for giving me the permission to quote and translate the article and to use the Daedalus image on my blog, Mr. Bill Litant.
